How Parent Partnership Builds Trust in the Early Years

How Parent Partnership Builds Trust in the Early Years

See how we collaborate with families, teachers, and children in Early Years to ensure a smooth transition into a new learning environment.

Starting school is a significant moment in a young child’s life. For many children, it is their first experience of spending time in a new environment, forming relationships with unfamiliar adults and being away from the people who know them best.

At MYIS's Early Years Program, we do not see this transition as something a child must manage alone. We see it as a journey shared by the child, family and school.

Emotional Security Comes First

Young children learn best when they feel safe, known and cared for. Before a child is ready to explore a classroom, engage in play or form friendships, they need to develop trust in the people and environment around them.

This sense of security cannot be rushed. It grows through warm and responsive relationships, familiar routines and repeated experiences that help a child understand:

“I am safe here. The adults will care for me. My family will come back.”

A child’s tears or need for closeness during this time are not signs of failure. They are a natural way of communicating uncertainty and seeking reassurance. When adults respond with patience, empathy and consistency, children gradually develop the confidence to explore beyond the security of their familiar caregiver.

Parents Are Our First Partners

Families know their children more deeply than anyone else. They understand their child’s temperament, routines, ways of communicating, sources of comfort and responses to unfamiliar situations.

Our teachers bring their knowledge of child development and their experience of helping young children form relationships and become comfortable within a group. When these two forms of knowledge come together, we can understand and support each child more fully.

This is why parent partnership is central to the MYIS approach.

Before and during a child’s transition, families and teachers communicate closely. Parents share what helps their child feel secure, while teachers share what they are observing in the classroom. Together, they consider the child’s responses and decide how best to support the next step.

Rather than following the same timetable for every child, we respond to individual readiness. Some children begin exploring quickly; others need more time to observe, remain close to a familiar adult or build trust with their teacher. Each response is respected as part of the child’s individual journey.

Trust Between Adults Supports Trust in the Child

Young children are sensitive to the feelings and signals of the adults around them. When parents and teachers communicate openly, treat one another with confidence and work consistently together, the child begins to experience home and school as connected rather than separate worlds.

Predictability is especially important. Calm arrivals, honest goodbyes, familiar routines and dependable reunions help children understand what will happen next. Over time, these repeated experiences build trust.

The child learns that a parent can leave and return, that a teacher can offer comfort and that school is a safe place in which to play, explore and belong.

From Security to Independence

The purpose of our approach is not simply to help children stop crying at separation. It is to establish the emotional foundation from which genuine independence can grow.
When children feel secure, they are increasingly able to:

  • Form trusting relationships with teachers
  • Explore their environment with curiosity
  • Participate in play and classroom routines
  • Express and regulate their emotions
  • Seek help when they need it
  • Develop confidence in their own abilities
  • Build a positive relationship with school and learning

At MYIS, independence does not mean that a child no longer needs adults. It means the child has developed enough trust in caring adults to move outwards, explore and return for reassurance when needed.

A Beginning Built on Belonging

Our youngest learners in Trust & Caring and Joy & Confidence are given the time and support they need to become comfortable in their new environment. Parents or familiar caregivers are encouraged to accompany their child during the initial transition, working in partnership with teachers as trust gradually develops.

There is no single timetable because every child and family is different. What remains consistent is our commitment to listening, communicating and placing the child’s emotional well-being at the centre of every decision.

At MYIS, we believe a child’s first experience of school should communicate something lasting:
You are known. You are safe. You belong here.

When families and teachers begin this journey together, children gain the secure foundation they need to grow in confidence, independence and joy.
